Some observers prefer to enter their data into the BAAVSS excel spreadsheet; you can download an example and also a blank spreadsheet ready for data input.

The spreadsheet is hopefully fairly self-explanatory, but experience has highlighted common problems - mostly caused by Excel getting carried away with its cell formatting capabilities! Firstly, the date must be in the format 23-Mar-05 as in the example. Second, if you attempt to reformat this column, beware you do not corrupt the year in cell xx. Finally, there should be no blank rows.

Having created your spreadsheet, either email it to me, or better, convert it to a primary format file - see data conversion - and email that instead. Do not email the text-and-tabs file; these tend to get corrupted in transmission.

The same rules for the data fields apply as for data entered in primary format - see the data field definitions.
