home railway pages Hellifield auto signals |
The LMS installed an early form of automatic signalling between Hellifield South Junction and Gargrave, and between Steeton and Keighley North. Shown here are a set of regulations for these sections of line, dated 1929 (was this the date of installation?), and also part of a train register from Gargrave. Although the signals were automatic, it seems to have been a requirement to maintain them at danger between trains. This led to an accident at Hellifield in 1955, when an automatic signal cleared reading into a manually controlled section for which the signal had not been replaced - the accident report can be found on the Railways Archive site here here. The report placed the blame squarely on the signalman for not replacing the signals as per the rules, but from a modern perspective the requirement for the signalman to actively do something to maintain safety seems a design flaw. As explained in the report, the signal controls were modified immediately after the accident.document with amendments title page page 1 pages 2-3 pages 4-5 pages 6-7 pages 8-9 page 10 bell signals 1950 orignal document page 1 (a) pages 1 (b) pages 2-3 pages 4-5 pages 4-5 pages 6-7 pages 8-9 (a) page 8-9 (b) Part of a Gargrave Train Register from 1967.
